Almost all labor nurses believe two things…full moons mean more people will go into labor and saying the word ‘quiet’ will jinx an entire unit.
My feet are throbbing and three hours after leaving work (an hour later than usual, I might add) I’m still thinking of things I may have forgotten to chart. Two of the people I sent home yesterday in early labor came back today in active labor, which means I scrambled to get them assessed and admitted and comfortable before they blew out their baby.
But one thing is for certain…I feel more comfortable now. Surrounded by new nurses, I feel strong in my abilities as a nurse. I’m proud of my profession, and I’m so glad that I made the decision to become a nurse.

Agreed. No one says the “Q” word or you get the evil eye of everyone else present! You also don’t ask, “Is it busy?” (The “B” word) or the bus load of preggos will be dropped off. 😉

On my unit, my (fairly new) tattoo of an oxytocin molecule on my forearm is a jinx. There is a collective groan every shift that I’m assigned to triage, and the arm has received threats.
